As our wonderful missions trip continues (from December 2011) we realize the days are counting down to returning home to the States. Continuing the journey...
Saturday, December 10. Today we had a 'down' day. By that I mean there was no schedule to consider! The place where we are staying has a pretty rigid schedule, though; if you want to eat breakfast you need to be downstairs, at the table by 7 am!!! It's worth getting up for. The cooks at the Baptist Mission's House are very good at what they do! We enjoyed every mouthful. An interesting side note: at breakfast we met and visited with some fellow believers from Korea. Wonderful how God directs our paths and we get to meet such interesting and dedicated people from all over the world. After breakfast we returned to our room to get organized, read, relax, and rest. Later, Joanne picked us up and we went out to eat. We then went to her house to watch a documentary/DVD on Jackie Pollenger (spelling is wrong I'm sure) a young missionary to Hong Kong. Had some dessert, checked emails on Joann'es computer, then back to the Missions house to sleep. It was a great day!
Sunday, December 11. We drove to a church south of Cebu City (Catamon) to minister there for the morning. It was wonderful. After a meal with the pastor we returned to Cebu City. We stopped at the Missions house to confirm our airline tickets, then went to the local mall to exchange dollars for peso's. We were going to need some extra peso's for fees at the airport. Had supper together with Joanne then back to the Missions house.
Monday, December 12. Today, Bill is speaking to some area ministers. We were up early to have one of those delicious breakfasts; Joanne joined us! This trip would bring us west over the mountains; the scenery was breath-taking. Kind of a twisty, switchback road; but we made it just fine. Pastor Rey (from the Bohol Bible school) joined us on this trip. Met with the Pastor's, had a great service and lunch. After some visiting we started our journey back to the city. Arrived at the Missions house and stayed in after the long day!
Tuesday, December 13. Today, Bill is speaking to the local ministers at their meeting/Christmas party. Had breakfast, did some reading, took a taxi to meet Joanne and Pastor Rey at the local fast food restaurant. Considering this was our last day in the Philippines it was great meeting the pastors and seeing Pastor Rey again. The message Bill preached (on the Second Coming of Christ) was well received and appreciated. After lunch with the pastors and their wives, we returned to Joanne's and contacted her missionary associates (Marcia & Mayda) hoping to see them before we leave. They were able to join us for a meal...great to see them again! Said goodbye to them and Joanne's other house guests. Joanne brought us to the Missions house where we settled our bill with the directors of the Missions house, and packed for our return trip home.
Wednesday, December 14. Our flight from Cebu to Manila was at 8 am; we were up by 4 am and on the way to the airport by 4:45 am. Joanne dropped us off; and after some heartfelt goodbyes we checked in and waited for our flight. Our flight path was Cebu to Manila to Shanghai, China, to Chicago. By the way if you ever fly through China know this: you will need to get your luggage and recheck it all back in...even if you are just flying through. We were told on our return trip home that would not be necessary...it was. We had about 30 mins to grab our bags, get back to check-in, go through security, and get to our plane. It was a heart pounding experience, but now we know what to do. Our flights all went smoothly and we arrived in Chicago about 5 pm local time. Flying over the international date line is mind-bending because of 'time-travel' as I call it! It seemed we left Cebu at 8 am and arrived in Chicago at 5 pm the same day! We boarded a commuter bus for our 2.5 drive to Janesville, WI where our car was parked. We were finally home by 10 pm. Contacted family members to let them know we were safely home; emailed Joanne, too!
Thursday, December 15. Todays was our day to unwind, get the mail, do laundry, and just recover. Both of us ended up with colds but we attribute that to the plane ride!!! We were fine in a couple of days!
Well folks, that was our exciting missions trip to the Philippines last December. How many times can someone say it was 'amazing'? I don't know, but it was amazing! We are so grateful to Joanne Oftedahl for inviting us and taking such good care of us; grateful to the pastors of Cebu and Bohol for welcoming us with open arms; to the students and faculties of each of the Bible schools where we ministered...you are truly wonderful and amazing people; and to the people of the Philippines who also made us feel welcome. We also appreciate each one of our supporters who helped make this missions trip possible.
August 2012 we'll be returning to the Philippines to ministry in Cebu and Legaspi...but that's another blog!

Our Wonderful Extra Trip to Bohol
Tuesday, Dec 6. We were up pretty early on this day. We had a boat to catch! We were going to a nearby island to teach at the local Bible college. Joanne Oftedahl (the missionary we were working with) decided to bring her vehicle to Bohol for our next few days of ministry. This would give us some independence to see the sights...and boy it was worth it. Joanne picked us up in town so she didn't have to travel through a lot of road construction and the ferry was on here side of town! It was a little hectic getting the ferry for the car and for us but eventually we were on board. The ferry took about 2 1/2 hrs. to travel to the nearby island of Bohol. Pastor Rey (local pastor in Cebu and the Bible school president) met us at the ferry and came with us. We arrived on Bohol, purchased some food at a local outdoor market, and drove to the school. Unpacked the car, brought in the food, our luggage and settled in. Not exactly sure what the time was, but by 7 pm we were in the chapel service with the students. It was great meeting them. The service was wonderful and the students were truly amazing. We hit the sack about 10 pm.
Wedneday, Dec 7. Morning chapel was at 7 am...needless to say we were up early to get ready. The 'comfort room' as they call the bathroom was very comfortable! Enough said!!! Chapel was amazing again...the students were very attentive and appreciative. After chapel we had a quick breakfast, rested some, then did some sight seeing. Pastor Rey was a terrific tour guide. We saw the Chocolate Hills (mounds of coral that the ground had eroded away from...called chocolate because in the fall they are brown), the Tarsiers (small, local only monkeys no bigger than my fist with huge eyes)...very cute but cannot be handled. We had a meal on a local dinner river cruise. Very nice! We were back in time to freshen up and have another chapel with the students.
Thursday, Dec 8. Another busy morning. Chapel at 7 am, breakfast and some rest. Little bit later we did some more sight-seeing with Pastor Rey. Enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant. By 3 pm we were back at the Bible school for the seminar Bill was teaching. After a great supper meal, there was another seminar at 7 pm.
Friday, Dec 9. Today's schedule was adjusted just a little. We were suppose to have the local pastor's join us for the teaching seminar but Pastor Rey found out many of the them were not able to come as planned because of scheduling and it was really raining. We still had morning chapel, then after lunch there was another session for about 1 hr. Being with the students was so encouraging and inspiring. They were so focused on all God had for them...it was truly amazing to see. We packed our belongings, said our goodbyes and boarded the ferry; arriving in Cebu by 9:30 pm. We stopped for pizza and were 'home' by 11 pm.
Again, Bohol Island is a beautiful island to explore; scenery, ocean, animals, and people. Our time there is a wonderful memory that still brings smiles to our faces. The most important part of the trip, though, was interacting with the students, faculty, President/Pastor Rey, and others who impacted our lives with there committment to all God has for them.

2011 Philippine Trip Continues
Hi folks...yes I'm back. Sorry it took so long. We've been busy but that's not really an excuse! Actually we are in Florida now, working on that little cottage I blogged about last year. It's getting homier every day (if that's a word!). Bill is a great 'fixer-upper' and is pounding nails at this very moment.
Anyway, back to our recent missions trip. Earlier I blogged that we went to Cebu to minister at their Bible college, in some of the churches, and to the local pastors at several of their meetings. It was really great.

Saturday, December 3. We had some time for a bit of sight-seeing in Cebu. Across from Cebu City is a small island where the airport is located. This island also has a very beautiful resort called the Shangrila. We walked the grounds of this resort, went to the beach (where I'm told they actually had to haul in white sand to make it look beachy, otherwise it's all coral), and had lunch there. We were with Joanne Oftedahl and her missionary associates from the Tampa area (Marcio & Mayda). After that we stopped at the Lapulapu Shrine. Lapulapu is a local hero-chief from ages passed that defeated (and killed) the explorer Magellan. Interesting! It was a great day and very nice to be outside in the sunshine and warmth. We returned the the place where we were staying and enjoyed an evening of relaxing.
Sunday, December 4. Bill spoke at a local church, about 30 mls south of the city. A great church with a lot of local outreach to the neighborhood led by Pastor's Edgar & Mercy. We were there for the morning service and an afternoon service that was mostly single mom's. See, the church has a Saturday school for the children (feeds them, etc. too) and on Sunday a service for the mom's. It's a great, evangelistic tool that reaches their hearts and 'see's' the love of God in action by helping with their children. Needless to say, we had a great time and the people were so glad that we had come.
Monday, December 5, This was our last day at IBC; Bill spoke in the Chapel. The students are really on fire for the Lord, wanting all that he has for them. They were also appreciative of our ministry. Somehow the students put together a gift for us to...as an appreciation! Two t-shirts from Cebu and two coffee mugs from IBC. Very sweet!
Most of the time Joanne came to get us, but some times it was easier for us to meet her at a certain location. Just up the street from the Bible college was a restaurant called 'Jolly B'; it's kind of like a McD's but with a different menu. The food is pretty good actually. Anyway, to meet Joanne we had to take a taxi on several occasions. Funny thing was most of the taxi driver's knew where that Jolly B was, no communication breakdown.
Next blog will be about the week we spent on the nearby island of Bohol. We took a 2.5 hr. ferry ride to get there. Bill spoke at the Bible college there and also had a pastor's seminar. Several things unique to Bohol are what they call the 'Chocolate Mountains' and the very tiny monkeys call 'Tartier'.

It was a great trip!
We've been home for a couple of weeks now; finally able to really sit down and give you an idea how our recent trip to Cebu, Philippines went. I kept a simple diary of each days events... below is an edited version of that log.
Tuesday, November 29: We left our home about 2:30 pm for a short drive to Janesville, WI. We had two-weeks worth of luggage with us, boarded a bus for a 2.5 hr. drive to Chicago O'Hare. Taking the bus was so much better than driving to the airport! On our arrival at O'Hare we started the check-in at the kiosk. We were interrupted by a ticket agent, trying to be helpful (I think he made me more nervous). Our ticket from Chicago to Cebu had us landing in Beijing, China. The agent told us we would have to pick up our luggage and get them rechecked and still go to the Philippine Airline ticket counter to get our boarding passes for the rest of our trip. He was seeing if there was any way possible for us to rebook our flight through another country. You know...normally your luggage travels to your destination...you don't see it again until you arrive. Because we were at the airport so early, this time delay wasn't a factor, but like I said it made me a little anxious. The agent was unable to rebook us. We boarded the airplane about 8 pm Chicago time for our 13 hour flight. The plane was pretty empty so we were actually able to stretch out...which was very nice! The flight went smoothly with no problems.
Wednesday, November 30: We arrived in Beijing, got our luggage (which wasn't that bad after all), boarded a bus to take us to another terminal, checked in at Philippine Air, and boarded our next plane for Manila. After a 4.5 hr flight, we transferred to a plane going to Cebu.
Thursday, December 1: We arrived in Cebu at about 10:30 am. Boy was it hot. Imagine the hottest summer day where temps are near 100 degrees and humidity is about 90%! That would be Cebu; it was very nice but we were still dressed for the Wisconsin 'November' weather! Missionary Joanne Oftedahl picked us up at the airport (with her Missionary Associates from Florida) and we went out to eat. Another missionary joined us for lunch. It was really good! We stayed at a local Baptist missions house while we were in Cebu. It was very comfortable. We could sign up for meals, we had our own bathroom, and an in room AC!!! We checked in, brought in our luggage (I changed to summer clothes and flip flops...yes!!!), and then went to exchange some money. We returned to the missions house to unpack, freshen up, get on the Internet, and finally lay down to sleep around 10 pm.
Friday, December 2: Up early to get ready, go have breakfast (very American), and go to the Bible college. Bill spoke at their chapel. It was great meeting all the students and interacting with the professors and staff. We also had the privilege of going out for lunch with the college president, his wife, the missionary associates, and Joanne. We had some down time to rest and refresh, then that evening Bill spoke at another chapel service, which was truly great! The students are very enthusiastic about worshipping their Savior.
Tomorrow I'll post some more diary logs. Hopefully by Friday I'll have the full two weeks of ministry here for you to read. Just to say, again, it was a fantastic trip and we are really blessed to have experienced it!

Here we are...thousands of miles from home!
Hello from Cebu, Philippines. What a journey it has been so far. We are well, loving the weather and the people. Each day is a fascinating new journey with adventures around every corner.
Cebu is a metropolis...4.5 million people; all, it seems, going somewhere at the same time! Lot's of people walking, taking taxi's, riding in vehicles called something like 'jeepknees' (spelled wrong but you get the idea). It's really a extended cab van, open on the side with two benches on each side for about 12-14 people to squeeze into but a lot more try to get in. We haven't ridden in one here, yet! There are also private vehicles, too! Put it this way...it's very busy.
We are enjoying ministry; that's also been very exciting. We just finished our time at Immanuel Bible College, speaking at the chapels. You can find more info on our ministry at: http://
We have really enjoyed meeting all the pastors, students, and others here. It's so much fun to interact with them and find out there are really fun people across the ocean, too.
A local pastor was cracking jokes about different types of food available to eat; many I won't mention because they are truly gross! A very funny joke he told us that involves dogs; you'll have to remember to ask me about some time!
It was kind of funny on Sunday at a local church; wonderful ministry, great people...the church is growing and expanding it's building; it's just not done all the way yet. Anyway, there were several cats wondering through the sanctuary, across the back of the platform, and generally nosing around like cats do. I told Bill later that I was sure at least two were at the altar...getting saved!
It's been a wonderful trip so far and we are praising our Father for giving us this great opportunity to be here. Love to you all...

On our way...to Southeast Asia
It's time; I can't believe it! We're almost ready...tomorrow evening our plane leaves at approximately 8 pm. We are scurrying around buying last minute items, snacks for the plane trip, and some for when we are there. Getting some items for the missionary we'll be working with, Joanne Oftedahl.
We'll be there through December 14: preaching, teaching, and overall helping where needed. Bill will be using his God-given ability to minister to ministers, students, and church people. I'll be there, using my abilities, wherever!
It's suppose to be a very beautiful area [Cebu City] with wonderful temps and perfect conditions. It may rain, but I think we can handle that.
We will miss everyone in the States; especially our kids and their families. Even though it's only two weeks it seems like a lot longer, I think, because we'll be so far away. They'll be okay...we're leaving them in the Father's hands!
This past weekend we preached at my home church; the same church my Mom attends. We were able to spend some time with her which was a great blessing, considering we're going to be pretty far away for awhile!

Next stop...Philippines!
First I want to let you know that our 8 day revival in Farmington, Il was fantastic. The people were (and are) so warm and friendly; they made us feel a part of their family immediately. And the services were excellent; the presence of our Lord was so evident...we truly thank Him for the great things that happened that week and will continue to happen.
Now to the Philippines! Yes, we're leaving next Tuesday and will be gone for 2 weeks returning home December 14. We'll be staying and working with our missionary friend from the Minnesota District (Assemblies of God) Joanne Oftedahl. Bill will be teaching in the local Bible school, speaking to the local pastors, and preaching in the churches. I'll be there to support him and do whatever else may be needed.
This will be our third trip to the Philippines but to a different area. We'll be flying from Chicago, to China, to Manila, to Cebu City. (I looked up some info on the WEB to get some facts about Cebu from http://www.cebu-philippines.net/.)
Cebu City located in the central part of the Visayas island group. It is one of the highly urbanized cities in this island group. It was in the province of Cebu that Ferdinand Magellan first set foot on Philippine soil back in 1521. The temps should be in the upper 80's during the day and upper 70's at night; could have some storms, too!
Sounds like Wisconsin in the summer...yes! We'll be enjoying balmy weather for awhile as we minister to these precious people!

Now to the Philippines! Yes, we're leaving next Tuesday and will be gone for 2 weeks returning home December 14. We'll be staying and working with our missionary friend from the Minnesota District (Assemblies of God) Joanne Oftedahl. Bill will be teaching in the local Bible school, speaking to the local pastors, and preaching in the churches. I'll be there to support him and do whatever else may be needed.
This will be our third trip to the Philippines but to a different area. We'll be flying from Chicago, to China, to Manila, to Cebu City. (I looked up some info on the WEB to get some facts about Cebu from http://www.cebu-philippines.net/.)
Cebu City located in the central part of the Visayas island group. It is one of the highly urbanized cities in this island group. It was in the province of Cebu that Ferdinand Magellan first set foot on Philippine soil back in 1521. The temps should be in the upper 80's during the day and upper 70's at night; could have some storms, too!
Sounds like Wisconsin in the summer...yes! We'll be enjoying balmy weather for awhile as we minister to these precious people!
